Meet the lakhpati Langurs of Agra.
The langurs of Agra were hired at
a whopping 1.5lac per annum package, to curb the menace of Monkeys.
I was reported by the media
person of the DRM of Agra that around 6 langurs were employed to get rid of
monkeys in four major stations of Agra division. It was a two year contract for
these monkey-scarers which earns a cumulative of 9lac per annum for the owners
of these langurs.
The
monkeys were causing a lot of havoc in the stations, by scaring the passengers,
by climbing the overhead railway cables. They often get electrocuted and their
bodies stick to the wires, causing interruption in the rail route. So the
railway staff decided that, these Langurs were of the best choice. The duty of
these Langurs is to make sure that there is no inconvenience caused to the
passengers by the monkeys and that they don’t create menace by climbing the electric
cables. Six Langurs work in two shifts of 12 hours to guard the stations. An
official has also been deployed to take note and supervise the Langurs. He
notes the attendance of the langurs and if they are found absent, Rs. 400 is to
be deducted from their salary.
